How to Support Your Partner with Chronic Back Pain

It can be difficult to watch your partner struggle with back pain. This is particularly when their pain is chronic and persists for quite some time. While you may not be able to cure your partner's chronic back pain, there are several things you can do to support them. Keep reading to find out what they are.

Be Patient

You may find that your partner has good days and bad days. On the bad days, be patient with them and understand that they may not be able to do everything you want or need them to do. Tell them that it's okay and remind them that you love them.

Take Care of Physical Tasks

Your partner may have a tough time grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning. These tasks require physical activity and may take a serious toll on their back. So, offer to take care of them on their behalf while they handle other, less physical tasks like paying the bills or scheduling appointments.

Promote Rest

There will be days where your partner needs nothing but rest or a good night's sleep. Even if there's household work to do or places to be, allow them to relax without feeling guilty. Explain that while you may not understand what they're going through, you will give them all the downtime they need to feel better.

Learn About Their Condition

While you may not be a doctor, you can learn about your partner's condition. Go to doctor's appointments with them. Get to know the various medications they may be taking and the side effects that come with them. The more you know, the better prepared you'll be to cope with their setbacks.

Do Not Give Medical Advice

Unless you're a spine doctor, it's not your responsibility to bombard your partner with unsolicited medical advice. Doing so can make them feel like you're judging them. Instead, listen to their needs and wants and do whatever you can to help.

Express Your Gratitude

Let your partner know that you're grateful for them and are thankful they are in your life. Even a simple hug or text message can turn a bad day into a better one for them. Remember that your partner may feel helpless and useless at times and an expression of gratitude can go a long way.

It can be difficult to love and live with someone who has chronic back pain. By following these tips, however, you can make both of your lives easier and more enjoyable.
